Description
“Bible in Ten Easy Lessons” is a mixed-age Sunday school curriculum. It uses the making of a large banner as the focus of each lesson. The lessons help children understand God's plan of salvation throughout the entire Bible. They are designed to introduce children to Biblical history from Paradise in Eden to Paradise in Heaven.
The lessons are geared around a major craft activity. The craft helps the children remember the theme of each lesson. It also helps them understand the whole of the Bible's message. The children work together to make a three-meter-long felt-on-calico (cotton cloth) banner. This banner is the focus of the curriculum. Each week a new section of the banner is added and earlier sections are reviewed.
The Old Testament stories are part of a big plan that finds its fulfillment in Jesus. So the purpose of each lesson, is to point to the New Testament, and the coming of Jesus. In this manner the children learn the whole story of the Bible.
The curriculum presents the major themes of God's big plan in a ten week series of lessons. It covers the following areas:
1. Creation – God's people happy in God's place (Genesis 2:4-25)
2. The Fall – The Temptation to disobey God (Genesis 3: 1-24)
3. Promises of Blessing – God's promises to Abraham (Genesis 12: 1-3)
4. King David Rules God's People – (2 Samuel 7)
5. Something Goes Wrong – King Solomon disobeys God (1 Kings 11:1-10, Exodus 24:3-4)
6. The Exile – God's people are punished. But what about God's promises? (2 Kings 24: 8-16)
7. The Birth of Jesus – Jesus is from the line of Abraham and David. He will bring God's blessing and rule forever on David's throne. (Luke 2)
8. Paying the Wages of Sin – Jesus dies for our sin.
9. The Resurrection – Jesus is the Risen king (John 20:19-31)
10. Heaven – God's People in God's Place again. (Revelation 22:1-6)
Considerations
- The ten story segments are simple re-tellings of Biblical material.
- Nine of the ten week sessions include a short review of the story from the previous week.
- Working together on the banner is an important part of the curriculum. It reinforces what has just been learned.
- The felt cut-outs are of people/objects with no ethnic features. Color of felt used for human skin can be varied for the people group for whom the program is being adapted.
- In some areas special effort will be needed to obtain felt, scissors, and glue that will hold felt on to the three meter-long calico banner.
- Each lesson includes instructions and the necessary characters to be cut from colored felt.
- The finished banner serves as a reference as other parts of the Bible are studied. Children can see how Bible stories fit into God's overall plan. This helps them understand the continuous plan of God's message.
