One-sentence summary

Young Laotian girl gets medical and spiritual help for her injury.

Description

This is a true story of a young Laotian girl whose family migrated into Thailand to settle on the central plains. At the age of four Tia accidentally stepped into live coals of the family cooking fire. The toes of her bare feet were severely damaged.

A missionary helped Tia get care at a Christian hospital in Thailand. She and her father decided to follow the teachings of Jesus during that time. When they returned home, they shared this new faith with other family members in spite of opposition.

Tia's name in Thai means “free”. Tia and her father became free from slavery to the evil spirits. They wanted to share this freedom with family and friends.

The book has 28 pages divided into six chapters. The illustrations are black and white line drawings.

Considerations

  • The drawings show the people and lifestyle of this group of people living in Thailand.
  • Some important details are missing and never explained. For example: chapter two describes the arrival of a missionary family of four all riding on one motorcycle.
  • A problem occurs because important details are missing and never explained. For example: The two young boys are described and named, but the mother is not named and only mentioned once.
  • The missionary father takes his four-year old son Joel to a house for a ceremony which lasted into the night. From that point on, the other members of the family are not mentioned.
  • Only the father is given food, and he bathes in the Thai way and settles down for sleep without his family.
  • Children are going to notice this oversight and want to know what happened to the mother and two boys.

The illustrations don't always agree with the story.

  • For example, Tia is described as having only charred remains of her tiny feet. The picture shows her with whole feet. Her toes just look like they have mosquito bites or sores on them.

If the story is only presented in an audio cassette format the lack of accurate pictures will not matter.
